What is Vipassana

Seeing things as they are, one breath at a time

Vipassana means "clear seeing". It is an ancient meditation technique in which you observe the breath and the sensations of the body exactly as they arise, without chasing the pleasant ones or pushing the unpleasant ones away.

Practised for three days in a row, in silence, this simple observation starts to change something: reactions slow down, the mind becomes clearer, and a steady, unforced calm appears that is hard to reach in a single evening class. That is why the 3-day silent retreat is the format we recommend as the first real step into Vipassana meditation.

Why a 3 day silent retreat

Long enough to go quiet, short enough to fit a weekend

Day one is arriving and unwinding. Day two is when the noise in the head finally drops. Day three is when the practice starts to feel like your own. A 3 day meditation retreat gives you all three stages without taking a week off work: you leave Thursday after work and are home by Sunday afternoon.

  • Noble silence (mauna) from Thursday evening to Sunday morning
  • Every session guided out loud by a teacher, so silence never means being left alone
  • A monastery setting built for stillness: forest, foothills, no traffic, no screens
  • The natural next step after our one-day retreat, and a strong foundation before a 10-day Vipassana course; some people simply call it a 3-day Vipassana course

3 day vipassana retreat practices

Twelve practices woven through three days

Sitting meditation is the core, but a three day meditation retreat is easier on the body and the mind when sitting alternates with movement, breath and sound. Each day at the retreat follows the same rhythm, and every practice is taught from scratch.

๐ŸŒ…

Gentle Awakening

The day begins before sunrise with slow breathing and a soft scan of the body, before any words or screens.

๐Ÿ™

Tibetan Prostrations

A moving practice that warms the body, opens the spine and turns effort into awareness.

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Hatha Yoga Flow

A gentle morning sequence that prepares the hips, back and shoulders for longer sitting.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

Pranayama

Conscious breathing techniques that settle the nervous system and sharpen attention.

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Anapanasati Meditation

Mindfulness of breathing: the foundation of Vipassana and the practice we return to most often.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Walking Meditation

Slow, deliberate steps outdoors or in the hall, noticing every shift of weight and sensation.

๐Ÿ“

Nail Board (Shakti Board)

Standing on a board of nails, optional and guided, as a direct lesson in observing sensation without reacting.

๐ŸŽถ

Tibetan Singing Bowls

A group sound bath in the evening, and one private session for each participant during the retreat.

๐ŸŒณ

Tree of the Path Meditation

A guided visualisation of the path of practice, cultivating inner stability and direction.

๐Ÿ•‰๏ธ

Om Chanting

The one moment the silence is broken by sound: collective resonance to close the day.

๐Ÿ“–

Personal Exploration

Free time for journaling, reading, a walk in the snow or simply sitting with a cup of tea.

๐Ÿ’ฌ

Sharing & Reflection

An optional Q&A circle at the end of the retreat, once silence is lifted, to integrate what happened.

3 day retreat schedule

How the three days unfold

You never need a watch: a bell tells you where to be. Sitting always alternates with yoga, breathwork, walking, sound or a meal, so the day feels full rather than long.

Thursday ยท Arrival

Arrive, eat, go quiet

Check in, settle into your room, a light dinner and an orientation circle. Then the silence begins and the phones go into a box until Sunday.

Friday ยท Day 1

Learning the technique

The first full day. Every practice is introduced from the beginning; most people spend it letting the working week fall away.

Saturday ยท Day 2

Going deeper

Same rhythm, quieter mind. Walking meditation outside, your individual sound healing session, longer sittings that no longer feel long.

Sunday ยท Closing

Silence lifts

Morning practice, Om chanting, the silence is lifted, a sharing circle and a last meal together. Departure at noon.

๐ŸŒ„

Before breakfast

Wake-up bell, gentle awakening in bed, Tibetan prostrations, a guided sitting, pranayama and hatha yoga while the sky is still dark.

โ˜•

Morning

Breakfast in silence, walking meditation in the forest, personal time for reading, rest or your own practice, then a longer Vipassana sitting.

๐Ÿฒ

Afternoon

Lunch, a slow walk, personal time, hatha yoga and pranayama, the nail board for those who want it, another sitting. Individual sound healing sessions run through the afternoons.

๐ŸŒ™

Evening

Dinner, Tree of the Path meditation, the group sound bath with Tibetan bowls, optional written questions for the teachers, Om chanting and an early night.

Friday and Saturday follow this rhythm in full; Thursday and Sunday are shorter. Roughly five hours of sitting a day, never more than an hour at a stretch, always guided. The timed schedule is emailed two weeks before the retreat.

Individual sound healing at the 3 day silent retreat: a participant stands in a large Tibetan singing bowl with another bowl held over his head by the teachers

Individual sound healing ยท included in the 3-day retreat

Three days of silence, and one hour of sound that is only for you

Every participant of the December retreat receives a private Tibetan singing bowl session with one of the teachers, on top of the evening sound baths with the group.

The bowls are placed on and around the body and played close to it. You lie down, eyes closed, and do nothing. By the second day the mind is already quiet enough to feel the vibration travel through the chest, the belly and the spine, which is why we schedule the private sessions for Saturday afternoon rather than the first day.

  • One-to-one, in a separate quiet room, with the teacher choosing the bowls for you
  • Your time slot is confirmed on arrival; no booking, no extra payment
  • Especially useful for people who find long sitting hard: the body lets go first, the mind follows

Sound healing on this retreat is not a spa treatment or a performance. It is a meditation in its own right, and many participants name the private session as the point where the three days come together.

What's included

Everything for three days, in one price

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

3 nights in a private room

Every participant has their own single room with a washbasin at Mount St. Francis, so silence continues after the hall closes. Toilets and showers are shared, just down the corridor.

๐Ÿฅ—

Vegetarian meals

Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, plus tea, seasonal fruit and snacks. Simple, warm, nourishing winter food; a gluten-free option is available if you ask when you book.

๐Ÿง˜

Full 3-day programme

All twelve practices, every session guided by Artem and Valerii, from the first breath on Thursday to the closing circle on Sunday.

๐Ÿš

Optional free transfer ยท limited seats

Return transport from Calgary, Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Edmonton to Cochrane, free of charge. There are only a few seats, so please request one only if you have no other way to get there: if you can drive or come with a friend, leave the seat for someone who can't. We confirm seats by email, first come, first served.

๐ŸŽถ

Private sound healing session

One individual Tibetan bowl session per person, plus the group sound baths every evening. Included, not sold on site.

๐Ÿ“

Post-retreat support

Written notes on the techniques and a follow-up so the practice keeps going after you get home.

Not included: getting yourself to the Calgary, YYC or Edmonton pick-up point, and anything you choose to buy in Cochrane on the way.

Who the 3-day retreat is for

Three days is the right length for most people. Not for everyone.

A one-day retreat shows you the technique; a 10-day course asks for a week and a half of your life. A 3 day silent retreat sits in between: long enough for the mind to actually settle, short enough to take from an ordinary weekend.

๐ŸคCome if you want

  • A real reset, not another weekend that is over before it started
  • To learn Vipassana properly, with a teacher in the room and enough days for it to stick
  • Your first silent retreat in a format that is demanding but not brutal
  • Three days offline in the foothills, with someone else cooking
  • A step up from the one-day retreat, or a foundation before a 10-day course

โœ‹Skip it if

  • You have to stay reachable for work from Thursday to Sunday
  • You want a wellness weekend where sessions are optional and phones stay on
  • You are coming for company: it is a silent retreat, even at meals
  • You expect three days to replace medical or psychological care you need

Retreat led by

Two teachers, with you for all three days

Artem and Valerii have led every 3-day Vipassana retreat we have run in Alberta, at Gull Lake and at Mount St. Francis, as well as the one-day city retreats and the online 10-day course. They teach in the Mahฤsi Sayadaw tradition of Vipassana, noting what arises as it arises, and both are Yoga Alliance RYT-200 certified. They work as a pair: one holds the meditation hall, the other the yoga and breathwork, and either is available for a private word whenever silence gets heavy.

Frequently asked questions

3 day silent retreat FAQ

What is a 3 day Vipassana retreat?

Three full days (three nights) spent in noble silence with a guided programme of Vipassana meditation, hatha yoga, pranayama, walking meditation and sound practices. You arrive Thursday evening and leave Sunday at noon. It is a residential retreat: you sleep, eat and practise at the retreat centre, and phones stay off the whole time.

Is the 3 day retreat suitable for beginners?

Yes. Most people at our 3-day retreats have never done a silent retreat before, and many have never meditated regularly. Every practice is taught from the beginning and guided out loud. If you can sit on a chair and breathe, you can do this retreat.

Where exactly is the retreat, and how do I get there?

Mount St. Francis Retreat Centre, a Franciscan retreat house just outside Cochrane, Alberta, about 30 minutes west of Calgary and 3.5 hours from Edmonton. Most people drive or come with a friend; there is free parking on site. We also run an optional free transfer from Calgary, Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Edmonton on Thursday afternoon and back on Sunday, but seats are limited, so please request one only if you have no other way to get there. Seats are confirmed by email, first come, first served; if you are flying in, send us your flight details and we will try to match the pick-up to your arrival.

How much does the 3 day retreat cost, and what does the price include?

$749 CAD per person, all-inclusive, if you book by October 31; from November 1 the retreat is $849. Booking fees are already included, so nothing is added at checkout. The price includes three nights in a private single room, three vegetarian meals a day with tea and snacks, the complete programme of practices including one private sound healing session, and post-retreat notes. The free transfer is optional and has limited seats. You pay a $449 deposit to book and the balance ($300 or $400) at the centre on arrival.

Does my room have its own bathroom?

Your room is private and has its own washbasin. Toilets and showers are shared and are just down the corridor, a few steps from your door. Bedding and towels are provided; slippers and a robe or comfortable layer for the walk down the hall are worth packing.

Do I really stay silent for three days?

Yes, and it is easier than it sounds. Noble silence starts Thursday evening after orientation and ends Sunday morning before the sharing circle. You can always write a note or speak privately with a teacher if something needs attention. Most participants say the silence is what they miss most when they get home.

What about my phone?

Phones, laptops and watches with notifications are switched off for the whole retreat. Before we begin you receive the organisers' number to leave with family, so you can be reached in an emergency without carrying a device.

I'm not flexible and I have a bad knee. Can I still do the yoga?

Yes. The yoga at a silent retreat is slow and gentle by design: its job is to make sitting comfortable, not to challenge you. Every posture has an easier version, chairs are available for meditation and you are always free to rest.

What is the daily schedule like?

Every full day follows the same rhythm: an early-morning block of prostrations, sitting, pranayama and yoga before breakfast; a morning of walking meditation, personal time and a longer sitting; an afternoon of yoga, breathwork, sound healing and meditation; and an evening of the group sound bath, Om chanting and rest. Roughly five hours of sitting a day, never more than an hour at a time. The timed schedule is emailed two weeks before the retreat.

What will I eat?

Three vegetarian meals a day, plus tea, seasonal fruit and healthy snacks between sessions. Meals are eaten in silence. A gluten-free option is available for all three days if you mention it when you book, and the kitchen can work around other allergies if we know in advance.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes you can sit and stretch in, warm layers and boots for walking meditation in the snow, a yoga mat and a meditation cushion if you have them, a water bottle, slippers, toiletries and a journal. Bedding and towels are provided.

What if I get emotional during the silence?

It happens, and it is a normal part of the process. Silence brings up what is usually covered by noise. Both teachers are available for a private conversation at any point during the three days, and the group is small enough that no one goes unnoticed.

Is this a religious retreat? Is it the 10-day Goenka course?

No. Mount St. Francis is a Franciscan retreat house that hosts groups of every tradition, and Vipassana itself is a technique of attention rather than a belief system. People of every background join. This is our own guided three day retreat led by Artem and Valerii, combining Vipassana with yoga, pranayama and sound; it is shorter and more gently paced than the 10-day Goenka course.

How is the 3-day retreat different from the one-day retreat and the 10-day course?

The one-day retreat is a single day in the city with no overnight stay: a first taste. The 3 day silent retreat is residential, three nights in a monastery with phones off, and it is where the technique actually settles. Our 10-day Vipassana course runs online from home. Most people do them in that order, and the three day retreat is the one we recommend if you can only do one.

Is a 3 day retreat enough?

For most people it is the ideal first retreat: long enough for the mind to settle and for the technique to become clear, short enough to fit around work and family. Many participants come back every season; others use it as the foundation for our online 10-day Vipassana course or a longer retreat.

What is the refund and cancellation policy?

Cancel or move to a future retreat up to 30 days before the start, that is until November 17, and your deposit is refunded minus the Eventbrite processing fee, or transferred to another retreat within 12 months, subject to availability. Inside 30 days the deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable, because your room and meals have already been paid to the monastery. You may pass your place to someone else with our approval. If we cancel, you are refunded in full.

Still have a question? Ask below, or reserve your room now and email us anything afterwards.
