Why a one-day silent retreat
Our phones vibrate more often than our attention does
Notifications, noise, an endless stream of information, and fewer and fewer moments when we are truly alone with ourselves. This is why a single day of Mauna, conscious silence, matters more today than ever.
From the first minute of the day retreat we enter Mauna: one full day without unnecessary talk, without phones, without outside distractions. Not because silence is a rule to follow, but because silence is where real attention to the body, breath, sensations and thoughts becomes possible.
- A 1-day retreat fits into an ordinary weekend: no travel, no time off work
- The shortest way to try a silent retreat before a 3-day or 10-day course
- Practical meditation techniques you take home the same evening
One day away from endless messages and information overload isn't a luxury. It's a way to reclaim the attention that gets lost so easily in the flow of digital life.
What you'll experience
A one-day yoga and meditation retreat built from six practices
Inside the silence unfolds a path of traditional yogic and Buddhist practices that work together to make one day feel complete. Every session is guided out loud by a teacher in the room.
Opening Circle & Intention
We meet, set an intention for the day and enter Mauna together.
Gentle Hatha Yoga
A slow practice that releases tension, builds stability and prepares the body for longer sitting.
Kriya Yoga & Pranayama
Breath and inward attention: techniques that calm the mind and create a steady, focused state.
Vipassana Meditation
The heart of the day retreat. Guided morning, afternoon and deep meditation: observing body, breath, emotions and thoughts without reacting.
Sound Healing Journey
Resonant instruments and singing bowls supporting deep relaxation and integration.
OM Mantra Chanting & Q&A
After hours of silence, sound and vibration gently bring us back to each other and to the world, then questions and a closing circle.
One-day retreat schedule
The shape of the day, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
A bell tells you where to be, so there is no clock-watching. Sitting is never longer than about 45 minutes at a time, and yoga, breathwork and tea breaks are woven between the meditations.

- Hatha yoga
- Guided morning meditation
- Kriya yoga
- Tea break
- Afternoon meditation
- Sound healing journey

Benefits of a one-day meditation retreat
What a single day of practice actually gives you
Reduce stress and mental fatigue
A full day without input lets the nervous system settle in a way a 10-minute app session cannot.
Improve focus and concentration
Kriya yoga and breath-based meditation train attention to stay where you put it.
Experience deeper relaxation
Hatha yoga, pranayama and the sound healing journey release tension held in the body.
Learn practical meditation techniques
Leave with methods you can repeat at home, taught step by step from the beginning.
Reconnect with your inner self
A day of silence makes room to notice what is actually going on underneath the noise.
Tools for everyday mindfulness
A day of mindfulness that leaves you with simple practices for work, family and the rest of an ordinary week.
Who the one-day retreat is for
Open to everyone. No yoga or meditation experience required.
Whether you are completely new to mindfulness or want to deepen an existing practice, you are warmly welcome at the day retreat. There is nothing to achieve, just come with openness to silence, to the practice and to yourself.

Who is leading it
One teacher with you for the whole day
Artem leads the one-day retreat in Edmonton, Valerii leads it in Calgary. Both teach yoga and meditation in Alberta and run our longer retreats together: the 3-day weekend retreat at Mount St. Francis and the online 10-day course. The one-day retreat is the shortest format, and every session of it is guided out loud, from the beginning.

Questions people ask first
One-day retreat FAQ
What is a one-day Vipassana retreat?
A single day, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, spent in silence (mauna) with guided practice: gentle hatha yoga, Kriya yoga and pranayama, three Vipassana meditation sessions, a sound healing journey and OM mantra chanting to close. You go home the same evening. It is the shortest retreat format we run and the easiest way to try a day of meditation without travelling or staying overnight.
Is a one day meditation retreat suitable for beginners?
Yes. The day retreat is designed for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Every session is taught from the beginning, out loud, by a teacher in the room. No previous experience with yoga or meditation is required.
Do I really have to be silent the whole day?
Silence holds from the opening circle until the OM chanting in the afternoon. You can always write a note or speak privately with a teacher if you need to. The closing Q&A is out loud.
What about my phone?
Phones stay switched off and put away for the whole day. This is the single most important part of a one-day silent retreat: one full day without notifications, messages or news.
Is the yoga hard? I'm not flexible.
No. The hatha yoga is slow and gentle, meant to release tension and prepare the body for sitting. Kriya yoga is mostly breathing and inward attention. Everything can be adapted, and you can sit on a chair for meditation if you prefer.
Where does the one-day retreat take place?
Edmonton: 10062 164 Street NW, Edmonton, AB (Sunday, October 18, 2026, currently sold out). Calgary: Saturday, November 21, 2026; the venue is being confirmed and will be emailed to everyone registered.
Is food included?
Tea is served at the two tea breaks. Please have breakfast before you arrive and bring a light lunch or snack for yourself; there is time to eat quietly between sessions.
Edmonton is sold out. What can I do?
Registration for the Edmonton retreat on October 18 is closed and there is no waitlist for this date. The next Edmonton one-day retreat is planned for December 2026; the exact date will be published on this page soon. In the meantime you are welcome at the Calgary day retreat on November 21; the programme is identical.
Is a one-day retreat enough, or should I do the 3-day or 10-day?
One day is enough to learn the technique, feel what silence does and take a working practice home. Many people do the one-day retreat first and then join the 3-day weekend retreat at Mount St. Francis or the online 10-day Vipassana course. Others come back to the day retreat every season as a reset.
Is this religious? Is it the Goenka course?
No. Vipassana is a technique of attention, not a belief system, and people of every background come. This is not the 10-day Goenka course: it is a one-day, guided retreat led by Artem and Valerii, combining Vipassana meditation with hatha yoga, Kriya yoga, sound healing and mantra.
What if I need to cancel?
You can cancel free of charge up to one month before the retreat date: write to life@vipassana.ca and we will refund you or move you to a future date. Cancellations later than one month before the retreat are discussed individually with the organizers, and because places are limited we can often pass your place to someone else.
One day is short enough to fit into an ordinary weekend,
and long enough for the noise to stop.
